Does anyone know what Hrishikesh literally means? (yeah, that's the original 'n authentic spelling... some technicality with the hindi characters used for the 'ri' and the 'hri' sounds... But i think since it adds confusion for all the non-Hindi speaking crowd, they use 'Rishikesh' more)
Hrishikesh is one of the (many) names of Lord Vishnu, and it means 'Lord of the Senses'. [For more names, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu#Names]
Those familiar with the term 'Rishi' (or 'Hrishi'), might argue that it refers to a 'sage' or a 'holy man'. Well, the sages (at least the genuine ones) are learned people who's 'senses' are supposed to be more developed and can 'see' things which others cannot. [For hard-core linguists: 'Rishi' is speculated to have been derived from 'Drish', meaning 'view'(also the root of 'Drishti' meaning 'sight')]. So, (H)Rishi means a person whose senses are more developed than others.
'Ish' means god or lord; and 'ke' denotes possessiveness. So, (H)rishikesh means "Lord of the Senses"...
And... going by that meaning, Nacho just invented a place [near (H)rishikesh], whose name means "Lord of the Naked"
