Reunification Day in Germany

From Johanna (She is not allowed to blog at work):

Two days ago, it was an important day for Germans. No, not Indepencence Day, as many of you guys can celebrate, but Reunification Day. On Oct. 3rd 1990 the former German Democratic Republicwas officially included into the Federal Republic of Germany. For me as a former GDR-citizen this day is even more special.

Is it a happy day? Yes, but not only happy. Reunification caused a lot of problems to many people and our country still struggles to fight them. Today we face economical problems, growing unemployment, growing poverty (yes, even in Germany), and a lot of political issues (as you might have notices in the last few weeks). But on the other hand, to me nothing is worth more than personal freedom and to have the right to go wherever you want, whenever you want, and to be allowed to say what you're thinking withouthaving to fear punishment. So for me and most of the Eastern Germans, two days ago was like an Independence Day.

Happy 16th Reunification Day, Germany!

Well said. What do west germans think about it? Ben? Arno?

Not sure where I was on Oct 3rd, 1989...probably would've been in Grade 1 at the time, so that means I would've been in school. All you old folks out there should be able to remember it a lot better than I can. Any memories?
